I feel fine. Should I get tested?
Because hepatitis B can be a “silent” disease that doesn’t cause symptoms for years, people who have it often don’t even know they’re infected. Hepatitis B claims the life of one person every 30 seconds.
Am I really at risk?
• Because over 10 percent of the Asian & Pacific Islander community is chronically infected with hepatitis B, all members of the API community should be tested for hepatitis B.
• An estimated 2 million Americans are chronically infected with hepatitis B. Over half are API Americans.
• Hepatitis B is 100 times more infectious than HIV. Because of its infectiousness and because it can survive outside of the body for up to seven days, hepatitis B can be spread through items such as shared razors and toothbrushes that have contaminated blood on them.
• Among API men living in California, liver cancer ranks as a leading cause of cancer death: #1 for Laotian Americans, #2 for Vietnamese and Cambodian Americans, #4 for Chinese and Korean Americans, and #5 for Filipino Americans. Continue Reading »
